Eenvoudige uitleg

Northern Albania is mountains. There are high valleys with stone villages, a famous boat trip through a gorge, a big lake, and walking routes that cross between valleys. The season is short: roughly June to early October.

The classic circuit

The standard northern loop is Shkodër → Koman by road → ferry to Fierzë → road to Valbonë → walk over the pass to Theth → road back to Shkodër. It takes three to four days and it is popular enough in August that transport and guesthouses should be booked ahead.

It can be run in either direction. Theth-to-Valbona is the more common direction and has the steeper climb at the start.

The Koman ferry

The Koman–Fierzë ferry exists as public transport for mountain communities, not as a tourist boat, which is part of why it is worth taking. It runs through a gorge so narrow the walls close in on both sides. The crossing takes roughly two and a half hours.

Sailings are seasonal and weather-dependent, several operators run vessels of different sizes, and schedules change. Confirm on the day.

Theth and Valbonë

Theth sits in a glacial valley with a stone church, the Grunas waterfall, a blue-green spring pool, and a lock-in tower used during blood feuds. It was reachable only by a rough track until the road was sealed; it is now considerably easier to get to and considerably busier.

Valbonë is broader and drier, with a wide white riverbed that runs partly underground in late summer. Both have guesthouse accommodation, mostly family-run, mostly half-board.

Shkodër and the lake

Shkodër is the natural base for the north: Rozafa castle above the river junction, the Marubi photographic archive, a walkable centre, and bicycle hire. Lake Shkodër is the largest lake in southern Europe and a major bird site, and Velipojë's very shallow beach is 22 km away.

Season and safety

The Theth–Valbona pass is normally walkable from roughly mid-June to mid-October. Outside that window snow, ice and closed guesthouses are all likely. Weather in the Alps changes quickly; the route is well trodden but it is a mountain crossing, not a path.

Mobile coverage is patchy in the valleys.
