In plain language

Albania works well with children if you pick the sandy coast rather than the pebble Riviera and keep drives short. Albanians are very welcoming to children in restaurants and public places.

Simple explanation

Albania works well with children if you pick the sandy coast rather than the pebble Riviera and keep drives short. Albanians are very welcoming to children in restaurants and public places.

Where to base

Durrës, Golem and Lalzit Bay in the centre, or Velipojë and Shëngjin in the north: sand, very shallow water, dense facilities, and short transfers from Tirana airport. Ksamil is shallow and clear but crowded and a four-hour drive from the airport.

What works

  • Beaches with sand and shallow entry — Velipojë is exceptionally shallow.
  • The Dajti cable car above Tirana.
  • Butrint — compact, shaded, and visibly a ruined city rather than a field of stones.
  • Boat trips from Sarandë, Himarë or Vlorë.
  • Lake Ohrid at Pogradec, and the Drilon springs.

Practical points

Baby equipment and formula are available in supermarkets in cities and larger towns and much less so in villages. Car seats should be requested explicitly when hiring and checked on collection. Pharmacies are widespread and pharmacists are a normal first stop for minor problems. Emergency number is 112.
