Explication synthétique

Albania introduced a permit in 2022 aimed at people employed by a company abroad who want to live in Albania. Rent is cheap, internet in cities is good, and Tirana has a small remote-work community.

The permit

Albania created a 'unique employee' residence route in 2022 aimed at remote workers employed or contracted by a foreign employer. Conditions, income thresholds and renewal terms change — check the current requirements on e-Albania and with the migration authority before making plans.

Practicalities

  • Internet: fibre is widely available in Tirana and the larger towns; mobile data coverage is good on the coast and patchy in the mountains.
  • Power: interruptions happen; a laptop battery and a mobile hotspot are sensible.
  • Coworking: several spaces in Tirana; very little outside it.
  • Time zone: CET, convenient for European employers and workable for US East Coast.
  • Language: Italian and English are widely understood in Tirana.

Where people base themselves

Tirana for infrastructure and community. Shkodër, Berat and Gjirokastër for cost and quality of life with slower connections. The Riviera works from October to May and is difficult in July and August, when accommodation is expensive and scarce.

Tax

Living in Albania for more than 183 days is likely to make you tax resident there, regardless of where your employer is. This is the point at which remote workers most often get into difficulty. Take advice before, not after.
