In plain language

Albania is inexpensive compared with most of Europe, especially inland and out of season. The coast in July and August is the exception and can cost as much as Greece or Italy.

Simple explanation

Albania is inexpensive compared with most of Europe, especially inland and out of season. The coast in July and August is the exception and can cost as much as Greece or Italy.

Where the money goes

Accommodation is the biggest variable. A Riviera room in August can cost several times what the same room costs in June. Food, transport and entry fees are cheap almost everywhere and almost all year.

How to spend less

  • Travel in May, June, September or October rather than July and August.
  • Base inland — Gjirokastër, Berat, Shkodër — and drive to the coast.
  • Use furgons rather than taxis between towns.
  • Eat the set lunch; it is the best value meal of the day.
  • Buy water and supplies in supermarkets rather than beach kiosks.

What things cost

Rather than quote prices that go stale, this Atlas keeps cost indicators on the cost-of-living page with their observation dates and sources. Treat any specific figure you see elsewhere, including in older guidebooks, as a starting point rather than a quote.
