Краткое пояснение

Bulqizë is a mining town. Deep under it is one of the biggest chrome deposits in Europe, and chrome from here is sold around the world.

Location and municipal boundaries

Bulqizë is a municipality in Dibër County, in the northeastern corner of Albania, adjacent to the border with North Macedonia. The municipalities of Mat and Tirana lie to the west, and the municipality of Librazhd borders it to the south.

The municipality is composed of seven administrative units: Fushë-Bulqizë, Gjoricë, Martanesh, Ostren, Shupenzë, Trebisht, and Zerqan. The town of Bulqizë itself serves as the municipal seat.

Population and 2023 census figures

According to the 2023 census, 7,875 people resided in the town of Bulqizë. The broader Bulqizë Municipality recorded a total population of 26,826 at the same count.

The gap between the town figure and the municipal total reflects the distribution of population across the seven administrative units that make up the municipality outside the urban seat.

Ottoman-era record of 1467

Bulqizë appears in an Ottoman defter (cadastral register) dated 1467, where it is described as a hass-ı mir-liva and derbendci settlement within the vilayet of Dulgoberda. A derbendci designation typically indicated a community responsible for guarding mountain passes.

The register's complete survey of the village is recorded as missing, but a list of household heads is preserved. These include Dimitri Bogdani, Kolë Sharqini, Gjin Kimeza, Gjin Kolandi, Nikolla Budi, Martin Bardi, Progon Buljani, Maqe Kimëza, Istvan Nenada, Progon Bogdani, Dimitri, Todor Damëza, Banek Alakasa, Nikolla Mesina, Budi, Gjergj Garuja, and Gjergj Iglat. The name Iglat is noted as deriving from the Albanian i gjatë, meaning 'the tall'.

The personal names recorded in 1467 reflect a mixed onomastic landscape, with Albanian, Slavic, and Latin-derived names appearing alongside one another among the household heads of the settlement.

Chromite mining and the local economy

Bulqizë contains significant deposits of chromite, a chromium ore. Mining of these deposits has been underway since the 1980s and constitutes the primary economic base of the area.

Chromite is an iron chromium oxide mineral and the principal commercial source of chromium. The scale of extraction at Bulqizë makes it one of the more economically significant mining sites in northeastern Albania.

Gas explosions at the Bulqizë mine

The Bulqizë mine has experienced a series of gas explosions since 1992. At least one of these explosions resulted in fatalities, though the article does not specify the precise number of incidents or total casualties.

The explosions have more recently been attributed — though this attribution is characterised as likely rather than certain — to seeps of natural hydrogen. The hydrogen is thought to have been formed from ophiolites, a type of oceanic crustal rock, and to have accumulated within a faulted geological reservoir beneath the mine.

The possible connection between ophiolite-related hydrogen generation and underground mine hazards at Bulqizë places the site within a broader scientific discussion about naturally occurring hydrogen seeps and the geological conditions that produce them.

Ophiolites and the geological setting

The suggested mechanism behind the Bulqizë mine's gas hazard involves ophiolites — sections of oceanic crust and upper mantle that have been thrust onto continental crust through tectonic processes. Ophiolitic rocks can, under certain conditions, generate molecular hydrogen through a process called serpentinisation, in which water reacts with iron-rich minerals.

At Bulqizë, the hypothesis — described in the article as a likely attribution rather than a confirmed finding — is that hydrogen produced in this way has become trapped in a faulted reservoir, creating conditions for dangerous accumulations underground.

Administrative classification

Bulqizë municipality falls within Dibër County, one of the twelve counties into which Albania is divided at the uppermost tier of local government. Dibër County occupies the northeastern part of the country.

The Albanian definite form of the settlement's name is Bulqiza, following standard Albanian grammatical conventions in which the definite article is suffixed to the noun.

Pronunciation and name

The Albanian pronunciation of Bulqizë is transcribed in the International Phonetic Alphabet as [ˈbulˈcizə]. The name is used in both indefinite form (Bulqizë) and definite form (Bulqiza) depending on grammatical context.

No etymology for the place name is supplied in the available sources beyond the incidental note that the surname element Iglat, recorded among the 1467 household heads, derives from the Albanian adjective i gjatë, 'the tall'.
