Independence

The Atlas is not affiliated with any Albanian government body, tourism authority, municipality, developer, hotel group or tour operator. No entity has paid for inclusion, placement or tone. If affiliate links are added in future they will be disclosed at the point of use and on the affiliate disclosure page, and they will never determine what is covered or how.

Voice

Clear, neutral, specific English. Concrete detail is preferred to atmosphere: dates, measurements, names, causes and consequences. A defined list of phrases is banned from every page and stripped from generated text — hidden gem, nestled, breathtaking, must-see, vibrant tapestry, picturesque, jewel of, whether you're a…. They are the vocabulary of marketing, and this is not marketing.

Two depths on the same page

Every substantial page opens with a plain-language explanation written to be readable by a ten-year-old, followed by the full detail. These are not separate pages: duplicating content for two audiences is bad for readers and bad for search. In guided view the plain explanation is shown prominently; in expert view it collapses. The content is identical either way.

Contested subjects

Where scholarship or public debate is genuinely unresolved, the Atlas says so rather than choosing. Examples currently on the site: whether modern Albanians descend from the Illyrians; census figures for religious affiliation, which several communities dispute; the true number of bunkers; and diaspora size, which varies enormously by definition.

Political and religious material is written factually and evenly. Current officeholders are not printed on evergreen pages, because a stale name is worse than a pointer to the current source.

People

Historical figures are covered with their consequences, good and bad, stated plainly — including Enver Hoxha's repression and Ali Pasha's violence. Living private individuals are not profiled. Images showing identifiable private people are avoided where rights are uncertain.

Superlatives and rankings

The Atlas does not assert that anywhere is the best beach in Europe, the most beautiful town in the Balkans, or an undiscovered paradise. Where a ranking or award is relevant, the publisher and the year are named so the reader can weigh it.

AI assistance, stated plainly

Parts of this site are compiled with AI assistance. The deep-research sections are written by a language model from one named source document, fetched in full, with that source linked and the number of characters read printed on the page. Curated facts, relationships and editorial judgements are human decisions. Figures are indicative and may be out of date — always verify with primary sources. Nothing generated is published without the source being named.

Corrections

Every page carries a correction form, and provenance is stored for each fact so that a report can be checked against the record rather than argued about. See the corrections policy.
