Sarandë and Vlorë are both towns on the sea in the south. Sarandë is smaller, faces Corfu, and is close to Ksamil and Butrint. Vlorë is bigger, has more going on all year, and is where the Riviera road starts.

| Sarandë | Vlorë | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Compact bay facing Corfu | Large bay where the Adriatic meets the Ionian |
| Size | The smaller of the two; heavily seasonal | A larger, year-round city |
| Sea | Ionian; clear | Both seas; clearer south towards Radhimë and Orikum |
| Beaches | Town beach modest; Ksamil and the coves are the draw | Town beach at Uji i Ftohtë; better south along the bay |
| Nearby | Ksamil, Butrint, Blue Eye, Lukovë | Llogara, Karaburun, Narta, Orikum |
| International link | Corfu ferry, 30–70 minutes | Seasonal Brindisi ferry; new airport under construction |
| Winter | Largely closed | Continues to function as a city |
| Airport transfer | About 4 hours from Tirana | About 2.5 hours from Tirana |
Choose Sarandë if your trip is built around Butrint, Ksamil and the far south, or if you want the Corfu link. It is the better base for the southern coast and the worse base for everything else.
Choose Vlorë if you want a city that works in every season, a shorter transfer from Tirana, and the Llogara pass and Karaburun on your doorstep. It is less pretty and more useful.
If you are only visiting once and want the postcard coast, Sarandë wins. If you are considering living there, most people find Vlorë the easier place to spend a winter.
