Formation after Albanian Airlines' collapseTìm hiểu chuyên sâu

The collapse of Albanian Airlines in 2011 left Albania without a national carrier for several years. On 30 March 2017, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced plans for a new state-backed airline to be created in partnership with Turkish Airlines. A joint press statement on 8 May 2017 confirmed the agreement, and on 21 November 2017 the airline's name, Air Albania, was made public.

Air Albania was formally established on 16 May 2018 as a public–private partnership. Ownership was divided among three parties: Turkish Airlines held 49.12%, the Albanian state-owned air traffic management company Albcontrol held approximately 10%, and the private firm MDN Investment held the remaining roughly 41%. Albania's national competition authority cleared the arrangement in September 2018.

Transparency monitors later criticised the selection of MDN Investment as the founding private shareholder, noting that the company had been formed only days before acquiring its stake and that the arrangement potentially conflicted with public procurement and state-aid norms. These concerns about the airline's governance structure persisted throughout its existence.

Air Albania based its operations and headquarters at Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza. The carrier's inaugural flight, on the Tirana–Istanbul route, took place on 14 September 2018. On 8 May 2020, Air Albania obtained a Third Country Operator (TCO) certificate from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which authorised it to operate flights between Albania and EU member states.

The airline maintained a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines. Over subsequent years its route network expanded and contracted. By 2025, operations had reportedly narrowed to flights primarily between Tirana and Istanbul, as several routes were cancelled and demand was increasingly captured by low-cost carriers expanding in the Albanian market.

Air Albania operated aircraft leased from Turkish Airlines and, subsequently, from other lessors. Its former fleet included the Airbus A319-100, Airbus A320-200, and Boeing 737-800, all initially leased from Turkish Airlines, with some Boeing 737-800 aircraft also leased from SkyUp Airlines. As of August 2025, prior to the suspension of operations, the airline was still operating a reduced fleet.

The airline named individual aircraft after Albanians regarded as significant contributors to Albanian culture and society. Documented examples include an Airbus A319-100 named Lasgushi, and two Airbus A320-200 aircraft named Migjeni and Fishta respectively.

2022 licence suspension and reinstatementTìm hiểu chuyên sâu

On 1 September 2022, Albanian authorities suspended Air Albania's business licence on the grounds that the airline had failed to declare its ultimate beneficial owners as required under revised corporate-ownership transparency laws. The suspension was short-lived: after the airline submitted the required documentation, it was lifted on 14 September 2022, thirteen days after it was imposed.

The episode foreshadowed more serious compliance and transparency problems that would later emerge. Concerns about the company's financial transparency became more prominent in 2025, when the opposition and several media outlets accused the airline of failing to publish audited financial statements for multiple years, raising questions about profitability and adherence to reporting obligations.

Financial deterioration and legal disputes (2023–2025)Tìm hiểu chuyên sâu

From 2023 onward, Air Albania faced mounting operational and financial difficulties. By mid-2025, its estimated market share in Albania had fallen to approximately 3–4%, eroded by the aggressive expansion of low-cost carriers. The airline cancelled several routes and, by late 2025, was serving a substantially reduced network.

A catering dispute contributed to the airline's financial deterioration: a court decision confirmed irregularities in invoicing between Air Albania and a catering provider, and identified weaknesses in the airline's internal financial controls. Separately, an American leasing company filed suit in a British court, alleging that Air Albania had stopped paying lease instalments for two Airbus aircraft. Industry reports indicated that at least one of those aircraft was subsequently repossessed by its lessor, further restricting the airline's operational capacity.

By late 2025 the combination of shrinking revenue, unresolved legal claims, and the repossession of leased aircraft had severely compromised the airline's ability to sustain regular scheduled services.

Turkish Airlines' withdrawal and final suspension of operationsTìm hiểu chuyên sâu

On 19 November 2025, Turkish Airlines announced that it would divest its entire 49% stake in Air Albania, ending the partnership that had underpinned the carrier's creation and early growth. At the time of the announcement, the remaining shares were held by MDN Investment (approximately 41%) and the government-owned Albcontrol (approximately 10%). Turkish Airlines' withdrawal accelerated speculation about the airline's solvency and prompted a search for new investors that was not reported to have succeeded.

Air Albania cancelled all scheduled flights in early December 2025. On 10 December 2025, the Albanian Civil Aviation Authority suspended the airline's operating licence indefinitely, citing failure to comply with national civil aviation and regulatory standards. The airline had reportedly not operated any flights since 7 December 2025.

As of December 2025, Air Albania had not resumed operations. With its major shareholder departed, its operating licence suspended, mounting debts, and at least one aircraft repossessed, the airline's continued existence was assessed by industry observers as highly doubtful.
